Newbies are allocated their first seat prior to joining, based on the firm’s business needs. From then onwards, trainees are able to discuss their preferences for the remaining seats. As with most firms, second-years tend to get first pick to ensure they complete their SRA requirements, but there was still plenty of work to go round. “We have a new internal lead for trainee supervision and rotations, ” explained a second-year. “They’re good about listening to everyone and allocating preferences – off the top of my head, everyone got to go somewhere they wanted this round!” We heard that a seat in real estate or corporate was almost a dead cert as they were the biggest teams (each housing 18 or 19 lawyers).
